Stonegate Flower Show 2019

One of the longest, if not THE longest, traditions in Stonegate is the annual Flower Show. In the good old days, it was a whole village affair topped off with a dance and carriages at midnight. Times have changed but it is still an event that is at the heart of this community.

This year's Show was held on Saturday 21st September, an unseasonably warm and sunny day. The Committee were delighted to see so many entries. A particular highlight were the entries from Stonegate School. Every child had produced an amazing work of art which were displayed at one end of the hall, a colourful backdrop to proceedings and proving there are some very talented children in the school. An added bonus this year was a stall set up by some of the pupils selling produce grown in the school garden. The adults were also on form. Flowers of all varieties and hues were there to be judged alongside home-grown produce from potatoes to pears. You don’t have to be green-fingered to take part in this Show though – there’s cookery, arts and crafts, and even a novelty section, this year including ‘My favourite nutcracker’ won by a hammer!

It was a lovely way to spend a Saturday afternoon, wandering around the hall admiring the exhibits, cheering on the winners receiving their silverware, meeting up with neighbours and having a chat over a cuppa and a delicious slice of homemade cake or even quaffing a cheeky glass of Pimms. With the support of the local school, Stonegate Flower Show is a wonderful event for the village and the Committee encourages everyone to try their hand in one or more of the varied categories. What’s that old adage? It’s not about the winning, it’s the taking part – and that’s just what this Flower Show is all about. You don’t have to be Alan Titchmarsh or Prue Leith to enter – have a go, have fun, be part of a thriving community event. Village life at its best!

The SFS Committee would like to thank the judges, local businesses and individuals who donated prizes for the raffle, Stonegate School staff and pupils, visitors on the day and all the participants for making this year’s Show such a joyful and successful event.
