A Flavour of Stonegate Flower Show

One of the longest, if not THE longest, traditions in Stonegate is the annual Flower Show. In the good old days, it was a whole village affair topped off with a dance and carriages at midnight. Times have changed but it is still an event that is at the heart of this community.
Alongside the Flower Show, the Fun Dog Show sponsored by GNHQ in Wallcrouch is a welcome addition to the day. Proud owners parade around the ring with their beloved pooches in the hope of winning a rosette and some doggy treats. It truly is a fun event.
The Flower Show follows on from the Fun Dog Show, opening its doors at 2pm for visitors to wander around the hall admiring the exhibits, cheering on the winners receiving their silverware, meeting up with neighbours and having a chat over a cuppa and a delicious slice of homemade cake or even quaffing a cheeky glass of Pimms. Flowers of all varieties and hues are there to be judged alongside home-grown produce from potatoes to pears. You don’t have to be green-fingered to take part in this Show though – there’s cookery, arts and crafts, and even a novelty section.
A particular highlight are the art entries from Stonegate School. Every child produces an amazing work of art which are displayed at one end of the hall, a colourful backdrop to proceedings and showing that there are some very talented local children.
It is a lovely way to spend a Saturday afternoon and the Committee encourages everyone to try their hand in one or more of the varied categories. What’s that old adage? It’s not about the winning, it’s the taking part – and that’s just what this Flower Show is all about. You don’t have to be Alan Titchmarsh or Prue Leith to enter – have a go, have fun, be part of a thriving community event. Village life at its best!
The SFS Committee would like to thank the judges, local businesses and individuals who donate prizes for the raffle, Stonegate School staff and pupils, visitors on the day and all the participants for making the Flower Show and Fun Dog such a joyful and successful event.
